Hello, I am Brian Babington, CEO of Families Australia, based in Canberra. Over more than a decade at Families Australia, I’ve been privileged to work with many of Australia’s finest not-for-profit leaders. I believe, however, that we can do far more to nurture the next generation of sector leaders.

Aim

To help meet that need, in 2018, I commenced a project about excellence in not-for-profit leadership. I am interviewing established CEOs and other not-for-profit leaders to: help inspire and assist aspiring not-for-profit leaders to take on leadership roles; celebrate the importance of the not-for-profit sector in Australia; and record the knowledge and wisdom of truly remarkable leaders.

Interviews

In each interview I ask the following core questions:

  1. What do you think have been important achievements for you as a CEO or not-for-profit leader? How do you define achievement?
  2. What motivates and sustains you in your work?
  3. What are the biggest barriers you’ve faced and what did you do to overcome them?
  4. Who or what supports you as a leader?
  5. What do you see as the major challenges facing the community or not-for-profit sector in Australia today?
  6. What advice would you give to others aspiring to leadership roles in the sector?
  7. Are there any other things you think are important for emerging leaders to know?

Each interview takes about 30-40 minutes and is written as a draft article (usually about 1,000 words) which is sent to the interviewee for approval. Nothing is published without their prior informed consent. The cleared article is published in Families Australia’s fortnightly e-bulletin, National Family News, as well as across social media platforms. The interview remains an enduring record on Families Australia’s website.
