Families Australia welcomes Commonwealth Government support for Royal Commission recommendations

Families Australia’s CEO Dr Brian Babington today welcomed the Commonwealth Government’s response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, in particular that it would issue a formal apology to survivors of institutional child sexual abuse and establish a National Office for Child Safety. The Prime Minister’s statement is here.

As Convenor of the National Coalition on Child Safety and Wellbeing – a major grouping of NGOs and researchers – Dr Babington said that these moves were positive, underlining how important it was to take joined-up national approaches to tackle child abuse and neglect and ensure justice for past wrongs done to children and young people.

Dr Babington also commended COAG’s ongoing support for the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2009-2020, Australia’s first-ever plan to enhance child safety and wellbeing, and stressed the need to provide further support for this important policy initiative which has seen the establishment of the office of the National Children’s Commissioner and the development of national standards on out-of-home care and on child safe organisations.
