Revelations this week about the hideous abuse of young people in NT detention have rightly shocked the nation and the international community, That such practices are able to be perpetrated is completely unacceptable in any country. Where was the proper oversight of the ‘justice’ system? Where was humanity?
The Royal Commission must be independent, must produce early answers, and must delve into the deeper causes behind juvenile incarceration.
Australia’s child abuse statistics are already a matter of national shame. The revelations of the past few days underline again the need to transform the way we, as a nation, value and care for all children and young people.
